I’m in a Reading Slump—and I’m Not Fighting It

Empty wooden park bench under a tree overlooking a lake on a summer afternoon.

My plan for today’s article was a book review. But the truth is, I’ve been in a reading slump for weeks. I tried the ebook version of Love in Catalina Cove by Brenda Jackson, but wasn’t in the mood. Then I picked up the physical book, The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager, but that didn’t work either.

I think so much is happening right now that I don’t have the mental capacity to dive into a fictional world. I took an overnight trip to New York. I’m training for the 10K in Texas—less than a month out! And still, I haven’t booked a flight. I’m going to the Chicago Planner Conference and The Edible Bookmark has contractual commitments for that. I could go on, but you get the picture—and you’ll be hearing more about all of these things in the coming weeks.

Then I had the brilliant idea to read an entire book today, pray I loved it, and write a review. But that made no sense in any world—and what if I didn’t like the book? So here we are.

Quite often when I’m in a reading slump, my go-to is novellas. They’re short, and finishing one feels like winning. I’m not going to force myself through a full-length novel right now, but a novella I can do. I’m eyeing these:

  • Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye
  • The Governess Affair by Courtney Milan
  • Echoes of the Hunted: Till Death Do You Part by Jessica Lynn Sorensen

That’s all I have for you this week on the book front. But with a long TBR and three unused Audible credits—this slump shall end.

How do you pull yourself out of a reading slump? I’ll take all the help I can get.
